porcelain veneers

Porcelain vs Composite Veneers: Which Is Better?

Find yourself hiding your smile because of crooked, chipped or discoloured teeth? Veneers are a great way to achieve a brighter and more confident smile.

There are two types of dental veneers: composite and porcelain. Composite veneers use resin to sculpt your teeth into their desired shape. Porcelain veneers are thin shells that fit over your teeth.

Crafted correctly by experienced dentists like ours, both kinds of veneers can help you achieve a stunning but natural-looking smile.

Here at Millersneuk Dental Practice, we mill our own veneers in-house. That means veneers are custom-made for you, without extensive waiting times.

Deciding which treatment to go for should depend on a number of factors.

Both treatments are designed to help you achieve a natural-looking smile.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are so thin that you can often see through them before they are attached. They come in different shades, which you can select with your dentists before work begins to create them. Sometimes, porcelain veneers are associated with looking unnatural. This only ever happens if the wrong shapes and shades are selected, so make sure you’re working with an experienced dentist who can show you examples of their previous work.

Composite veneers

The resin used in composite veneer treatments is colour matched to your natural teeth. The resin is then expertly sculpted, before it is hardened and polished, giving your new teeth a life-like, beautiful appearance.

Durability and price

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are strong and long-lasting, with a lifespan of 10 to 20 years. As the treatment requires removing a part of the tooth surface, the procedure is irreversible. This also means that they are more expensive compared to composite veneers.

Composite veneers

While composite veneers can be cheaper, they do have to be refreshed frequently, as the resin material is not as strong as porcelain. They can be replaced as they require less or no enamel removal.

That does mean that if you would prefer to remove composite veneers in the future, you can. If you’re a fan of Love Island’s Molly Mae, you might have seen that she recently had her veneers removed. They were composite veneers: it wouldn’t have been possible for her to reverse the procedure had she opted for porcelain.

At Millersneuk Dental Practice, we offer a range of payment options to make both treatments accessible. To find out which payment plan you qualify for, click here.

Number of visits

Porcelain veneers

For porcelain veneer treatments you’ll need to visit your dentist two to three times to prepare and make sure permanent veneers fit properly. You will also need to wear temporary veneers while your permanent ones are created (as we will our veneers in-house, this reduces the waiting time).

Composite veneers

Composite veneers treatments can be accomplished in one visit.

Which one should you go for?

The dental veneer treatment you should go for depends on your specific circumstances. Keep in mind your preferences for appearance, durability, price and treatment time when making your decision.

When consulting with one of our dental experts, we can help you decide on the treatment that’s best suited to you.

Caring for Your Teeth (Dental Hygiene Tips)

With days getting longer, brighter and warmer, and restrictions easing, many of us are now looking to book in for a regular dental check-up.

Before your next dental visit, here are a few simple things you can do at home to help improve and maintain good dental hygiene.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day will help you maintain healthy gums and teeth.

While you brush, it is important to remember to do so properly. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes, moving in gentle, circular motions. This will ensure that you get rid of all that plaque and bacteria build-up, leaving your teeth nice and clean!

The toothpaste you use makes a big difference if you want to achieve a healthy-looking smile. You should look for toothpaste that contains fluoride. As well as removing plaque, the fluoride will help strengthen tooth enamel, creating a stronger protective barrier for your teeth.

Flossing is often overlooked in dental routines. However, without it, you can miss pieces of food and plaque from those hard-to-reach areas, causing bad breath and tooth damage.

It is recommended that you floss once a day, using flossing tapes or an interdental brush. This will help stimulate gums, decrease plaque build up and reduce inflammation. Ultimately, it will lead to healthier gums and teeth.

Cut down on sugar

Being at home means that we’re snacking more than usual. Unfortunately, this can have a damaging effect on your teeth.

Having a balanced, healthy lifestyle and limiting sugar as much as you can will help prevent tooth decay and stained teeth.

dental implant denture

Why are dental implants a better solution to regular dentures?

Missing teeth can lead to many complications: weakening of the jawbone, misalignment of adjacent teeth, and the ability to smile with confidence. There are two common treatments for restoring missing teeth: dentures and implants.

Dentures are removable false teeth that fit over the gums to replace missing gaps. They eliminate potential problems caused by gaps and improve the appearance of your smile.

Dental implants involve embedding a small titanium rod into the jawbone where the missing tooth used to be. Over time, the bone fuses with the implant, securing it into place, so that it can perform and feel like a natural tooth.

With roughly 130,000 procedures taking place in the UK every year, dental implant treatments are the most effective solution for replacing missing teeth.

The benefits of dental implants

There are a number of reasons that permanent dental implants are a better solution to removable dentures.

Dental implants look, feel and behave like natural teeth. That means that they provide exceptional strength and function that is incomparable to other restoration treatments.

While dentures need to be meticulously cleaned and stored correctly, dental implants cannot be removed and can easily be cared for like the rest of your teeth.

It can take a while for patients to get used to removable dentures, especially when eating and speaking with them in place. As dental implants act like natural teeth, patients can eat, drink and talk with confidence.

Dental implants will also prevent the jawbone from weakening. As implants are placed directly into the jaw, this stimulates the bone in and around that area. The jaw remains firm and healthy, which helps to retain the face’s bone structure and results in a fuller, more youthful appearance.

dentist referral

Why refer dental implant patients to Millersneuk Dental Practice?

Dental implants are a secure and permanent solution to missing teeth. They help preserve patients’ jawbones and facial structures, are easy to clean and care for, and allow patients to eat, drink, talk and smile with confidence.

Many dentists who don’t offer dental implant surgery at their practice choose to refer their patients to Millersneuk Dental Practice for treatment.

Are you a dentist whose patient needs dental implants? Read on to find out why you should refer them to Millersneuk Dental Practice.

We won’t poach your patients

Some dentists have concerns about referring their patients to other practices, as they’re worried they won’t return.

To alleviate these concerns, we have a strict code of conduct in place. We’ll only treat patients from other practices for the procedures they’re referred for.

When a patient is referred to us for dental implant treatment, we’ll only treat them for this particular issue, and where possible, we’ll recommend that follow-up check-ups take place at their original dental practice.

Following dental implant treatment, we’ll refer your patients back to you with a detailed report on the procedure and its results.

We alleviate patient concerns

One of the biggest concerns when it comes to getting dental implant treatment is how painful the procedure will be.

We prioritise patients’ safety and comfort. When undergoing a dental implant procedure, our dentists will guide the patient through the process to ensure they feel comfortable and calm from beginning to end.

The treatment starts with a conversation between the patient and one of our dentists, explaining what to expect.

Then, a local anaesthetic is used. This will completely numb the jaw, gums and mouth. With numbed nerves, the patient might feel a slightly strange sensation during the surgery, but it will not be a painful experience.

When the surgery is complete, we will give the patient information on how to care for their implant at home. Follow-up appointments will be arranged to ensure the implant is healing as it should – this can often take place at the patient’s original practice. A permanent crown will be affixed to the implant once it has healed.

Our dentists are dental implant experts

Our treatments are led by our principal dentist, Dr Philip Church, who has a special interest in dental implants. As a member of the Association of Dental Implantology, Philip has helped many patients to restore their smiles. He prioritises keeping patients calm and comfortable throughout the treatment.

We offer flexible payment plans

We offer a range of flexible, interest-free finance options to help patients get the treatment they need. They can assess which payment plan is best suited to them.

dental implants cost

How much do dental implants cost?

If you have missing teeth, dental implants can help to restore your natural smile. But what are dental implants and how much will they set you back? Read on to learn more.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are the modern solution to missing teeth. They are the next best thing to real teeth and provide better long-term value than conventional temporary teeth replacement options like dentures.

Dental implants are a secure and permanent treatment that look and feel like natural teeth. Small titanium rods are inserted into the cavity of your jawbone. The bone surrounding your implant will gradually fuse with the rod, securing the implant in place. Finally, a crown or bridge is fitted to create a natural-looking smile with long-lasting results.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent and natural solution to missing teeth. They look, feel and behave like real teeth. You’ll be able to eat, talk and laugh with confidence.

Dental implants also help to preserve bone strength and promote a healthy facial structure. When you lose a tooth, the jaw can weaken, making it hard to chew. Temporary solutions like dentures don’t address this problem: once you lose a tooth, only permanent dental implants can help to preserve your jaw strength.

Dental implants are easy to clean and care for. There is no need to remove them – in fact, you won’t be able to, as they are permanent solutions. Just like natural teeth, they should be brushed with toothpaste twice a day.

How much do dental implants cost?

Dental implant prices depend on the type of treatment you’ll need and the number of teeth you want to replace. A typical treatment can start from around £2,300.

Here, at Millersneuk Dental Practice, we offer flexible, interest-free finance options to help our patients get the treatment they need. We have 6 to 18-month payment terms available.

invisalign suitable

Is Invisalign suitable for everyone?

More than 9 million people worldwide have been treated with Invisalign. But is Invisalign suitable for everyone?

Misaligned teeth can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Invisalign clear aligners are the modern alternatives to fixed metal braces, which can be cumbersome and unsubtle.

Invisalign clear aligners are thin plastic trays that gently and gradually move your teeth to their desired location, making them straighter and better aligned. A bespoke Invisalign treatment is created for each patient.

Your Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation with one of our expert dentists.

We will assess your teeth using advanced 3D scanning technology. The scan will help to create a custom treatment plan specifically for you. You will also be able to see a virtual representation of your future smile.

You will then receive your first set of aligners to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, changing to a new set of aligners every ten to fourteen days. Each set of aligners will gently and gradually straighten your teeth.

Once your teeth have shifted into their correct position, you will be fitted with a set of clear retainers to give you a long-lasting smile.

As they are custom-made, Invisalign clear aligners will gently and gradually shift your teeth into place.

Invisalign aligners are removable, giving you the flexibility to eat and drink as you like, simply by removing the aligners.

Invisalign also allows you to view a virtual demonstration of your new smile and treatment plan before you begin your treatment, so that you can make sure you’re happy with the expected results even before your treatment is complete.

Who should use Invisalign?

Invisalign clear aligners are for both adults and teens who are looking for a virtually invisible solution to a better looking smile.

Invisalign can be used to treat most misalignments cases. They are usually used to treat mild and moderate misalignment or gapping issues, but they can also be used to correct significantly misaligned teeth.

The best way to tell if Invisalign is suitable for you is to speak to a dental professional. Our dentists will be able to assess your teeth and advise whether using Invisalign is the right approach.

Dental Treatment in Lockdown

At Millersneuk Dental Practice we are still offering dental treatments in line with government guidelines.

For us, our patients’ safety come first. We have measures in place in the practice to ensure that you feel safe and comfortable when paying us a visit. To find out more, contact us here.

While the pandemic has brought many restrictions, we don’t want people to feel discouraged to seek dental treatment if they require it. In fact, for many, now is actually a good time to get treatment.

While here at Millersneuk Dental Practice, we prioritise the safety and comfort of our patients, some intensive treatments can require some recovery time.

In normal circumstances, patients might have to return to work/school immediately after visiting the dentist. Now, as most of us are working remotely, this allows us to recover in the comfort of our own homes, even while continuing to work.

Face Masks

Face masks help us to protect one another, but they also cover your face – ideal for when you’re receiving treatments! Cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics like dermal fillers sometimes cause some swelling while they heal; with face masks, this can be easily covered and disguised until you’ve reached home.

Video Consultations

At the beginning of the pandemic, we began offering free initial video consultations, and these have proved popular. This allows us to limit the number of trips you’ll making to our practice, promoting safety measures and saving you time.

In order to make our call as effective and efficient as possible, we encourage you to upload a close-up of your smile when filling out our contact form. Then we will arrange a call to discuss your treatment.

During the call, you will speak to one of our experienced dentists, who will answer your questions and provide personalised recommendations.

New Year’s Resolutions for your teeth

We all have a list of things we’ve been meaning to get around to. For many of us, it’s improving our smiles. But it’s so easy to put things off, even if they’re important to us.

The look of our smiles can have a big impact upon our confidence and the way we feel about ourselves. Now that many of us have moved to online working where we’re constantly looking at our own faces on Zoom, we’re noticing small changes that we’d like to make to our smiles.

We believe that everyone should feel confident in their smile. If you’ve made improving the look and feel of your teeth a New Year’s Resolution, here are some ideas for inspiration…

Dental implants

Having a missing tooth can make people feel embarrassed, self-conscious, and nervous about smiling widely, even if they wear dentures or have a crown installed. Dental implants can help restore your confidence because they look, feel and function like natural teeth.

Not only that, but dental implants help to restore strength to your jaw, which can easily weaken over time when teeth are missing.

Here at Millersneuk Dental Practice, we use premium quality, long-lasting and affordable implants. Learn more about dental implants here.

Veneers/Composite bonding

Everyday life can cause our teeth to become discoloured, misaligned and chipped.

Veneers and Composite Bonding are long-lasting solutions that help improve your smile.

These treatments create a natural aesthetic result without damaging the structure of the tooth.

Recently, Dr Jonathan Fitzpatrick, helped a patient to fix their uneven, crooked teeth. He used Composite Bonding as part of the treatment to restore her smile. Discover more about what he did here.

To learn more about veneers and why they’re a great solution, click here.

Being on Zoom so often might have you wanting to perfect your smile by straightening your teeth.

Invisalign is a clear plastic aligner that gradually puts pressure on the teeth, moving them to their desired location.

As the aligners are transparent, they don’t draw attention, unlike traditional fixed braces, allowing you to smile without feeling self-conscious.

Don’t delay – if addressing a dental concern is on your New Year’s Resolution list, make it happen in 2021.

Smile Makeover: Invisalign with Composite Bonding

Each patient comes to our practice with a different challenge. No two smiles are the same, so our experienced dentists create bespoke treatment plans for every patient.

We wanted to share a recent example of a successful smile makeover by Dr Jonathan Fitzpatrick. He created a bespoke treatment plan for a patient with a challenging misalignment issue.

Read on to learn about the treatment process and to see the results.

The challenge

Our patient visited Dr Fitzpatrick seeking treatment for crooked and unevenly edged teeth. The patient wanted their teeth to be straighter and better aligned, so that they could smile with confidence.

The treatment

Dr Fitzpatrick considered a range of options to correct the patient’s teeth. One of his primary concerns was finding a solution that was both discreet and minimally invasive.

He decided that a combined treatment programme of Invisalign and composite bonding would offer the best solution.

Invisalign is a form of clear plastic aligner worn throughout most of the day and night. The aligners gradually put pressure on the teeth, moving them to their new desired location. As the aligners are transparent, they’re hard to detect and don’t draw attention.

Composite bonding is a method of covering parts of the teeth with small pieces of strong composite resin. Dr Fitzpatrick was keen not to cover the patient’s teeth entirely, because they were comparatively healthy and strong.

The results

Following a 3D scan, he created a year long Invisalign treatment plan. A series of new aligners were introduced once every four to six weeks. The treatment was successful, and the patient’s teeth are now almost perfectly aligned.

Once the Invisalign treatment was complete, Dr Fitzpatrick undertook the composite bonding procedure. By carefully colour matching the composite resin to the patient’s teeth he was able to achieve a very natural effect.

“This was a really enjoyable smile makeover to perform because a lot of different techniques and approaches were needed. The most challenging aspect of the treatment was to make the final smile look natural.

“I invested plenty of time shaping and matching the colour of the composite resin to the patient’s teeth. I’m so glad I did, because the results look totally authentic. I’m really pleased with how this treatment went – and the patient was too!”

anti-wrinkle treatment

Q&A with anti-wrinkle and dermal filler expert, Dr Julianne Anderson

Dr Julianne Anderson is our resident expert in aesthetic medical treatments. She has trained with consultant plastic surgeon, Dr Taimur Shoaib, attended further specialist courses at the Aesthetic Training Academy in Glasgow as well as completing Dr Tim Pearce’s ‘Lip Masters’ course. She also spent time work-shadowing top US Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr Heidi Waldorf in her New York clinic.

We asked Dr Julianne all about facial aesthetic procedures and what you should expect from each treatment.

Hello Dr Julianne. Firstly, can you tell us what you do?

Absolutely. I specialise in non-surgical cosmetic facial treatments, like anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. I help patients to feel their best and to get a more youthful look.

What is your approach to treatments?

I’m a big advocate of enhancing rather than replacing natural features. I want the results to be noticeable but subtle.

When you ‘overdo’ a treatment, you can actually look older rather than younger. I always caution my patients against procedures that I believe will make them look unnatural.

What can aesthetic facial treatments like anti-wrinkle treatment and dermal fillers do?

Following an initial assessment, your dentist will match the colour of the resin to your existing shade. If you are combining composite bonding with teeth whitening, this will take place before the resin is applied.

Your dentist will then prepare your teeth for treatment and cover it in a bonding agent. The thin composite resin will be applied to the teeth and shaped while in place. Finally, the resin will be hardened and set using a UV light.

What can aesthetic facial treatments like anti-wrinkle treatment and dermal fillers do?

Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are both designed to help people look younger and more energised. They are both injectable treatments, but they work in different ways.

Anti-wrinkle treatment works by freezing muscles to stop your face forming creases and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers work by adding volume to areas of the face to make them look plumper. They can also add structure to areas where fine lines and wrinkles have appeared.

Both of the treatments can make a big difference to your appearance, but they won’t fully remove signs of aging. For example, deep laughter lines won’t totally disappear, but they will be a lot less prominent.

Done correctly, people shouldn’t be able to tell that you’ve received a treatment; they’ll just notice that you look rejuvenated and refreshed.

What can I expect from the procedures?

Both anti-wrinkle treatment and dermal filler treatments are injected into targeted areas of the face.

Anti-wrinkle injections are normally to target three main areas, lines at the sides of the eyes (‘crows feet’), vertical frown lines in between the eyebrows and horizontal lines on the forehead. It can also have other uses such as to mask a gummy smile or to help ease pain from clenching the jaw. The treatment takes about fifteen minutes, and you’ll start noticing results about three to seven days after treatment.

Dermal fillers can be injected in any area of the face that lacks volume, including the lips, the cheeks and under the eyes. The procedure takes less than thirty minutes. You’ll notice some results right away and the full effects will be noticeable within two to four weeks.

How long do the treatments last?

Anti-wrinkle treatment usually lasts between four to six months. Dermal fillers usually last between six to eighteen months.

Thanks, Dr Julianne!
